Abstract

Water plays a vital role not only in fulfilling the basic human need for life and health, but also plays a vital role in socioeconomic development. Recently, remote sensing (RS) coupled with geographical information system (GIS) has been proven to be an efficient tool to identify suitable sites for water harvesting structures with minimal field visits. This chapter discusses a study that aims to identify suitable sites for various water harvesting structures such as check dams, farm ponds, and boulder bunds in Upper Bhima micro-watersheds using GIS and RS techniques. The study reveals that the application of RS, GIS, and geovisualization technique is extremely useful to locate the appropriate water harvesting structures. Thus, for sustainable development of watersheds, soil and water conservation can be implemented by positioning suitable water harvesting structures in the Upper Bhima watersheds.
