Abstract

Rapid development of international sea trade in the last few decades has eventually led to questioning of seismic safety of port structures. In life cycle of port structures, destruction by an earthquake might be a rare incident. Once it occurs, the magnitude of the consequences will be so large that the effects of earthquake can be a major issue of national interest. Hence, these structures are to be analyzed and designed carefully for seismic forces. In India, currently there is no code for earthquake-resistant design of Port structures. The existing earthquake-resistant design codes i.e. IS 1893-2002 and IS 13920-1993 are intended for building systems and are not sufficient for Port structures which behave differently than buildings and bridges. Therefore, it is necessary to develop codes and guidelines for the seismic design and retrofit of harbor structures to minimize economic losses in future earthquakes. This paper is a survey paper presenting an overview of present scenario of seismic design of port structures worldwide. The primary goal of this study is to go through various Indian and foreign papers available for developing a consistent set of seismic design guidelines to mitigate hazards and losses due to earthquakes. The paper also briefs about the performance based seismic design concept & methodology.
