dc.description.abstract | The architecture for water transcends time and space in its proliferationacross geographies and cultures. These unique and diverse structuresarticulated the anthropogenic relationship to water, seamlessly weaving inthe spiritual with the mundane. This book proposes that the architecturefor water represents an ecosystem of entities forming a network ofrelations termed as spatial ecology. The links and connections contribute to the resilience and efcacy of the systems in time and space and embeds within it the tacit knowledge of a people whose comprehensionof the relation between available resources and a way of life was deeplyrooted in local conditions. The expressions are a celebration of water through the architecture. Theyenrich the experience of procuring water, a drudgery for many. The focusof this book is Jodhpur in Rajasthan with more than 400 water structuresthat have supported the bustling trading centre for centuries despite theabsence of perennial rivers. It demonstrates the sensitivity and ingenuityof the craftspeople in their ability to ascertain the potential of the aquifer, ensure regular replenishment and articulate architecture as a relationshipbetween the people, the landscape and water | |
