Abstract

Design and construction of berthing structures has become a major concern as waterway has become a major mode of communication and transportation. It is a major contributing mode to Indian economy. For bulk transportation of materials and passengers, water way proves to be the cheapest mode of transportation. This study is focused on analyzing and design berthing structure for bulk carrier vessel with different structural system. IS 4561-Part I, II, III, IV and V, provides guidelines for planning of ports and harbors and calculation of forces acting on berthing structure. It includes analyzing and designing of RCC piled jetty with different structural system for facilitating berth to bulk carrier vessel of 50000 DWT under different geographic parameters. The different parameters consist of different pile spacing, different water depth, different soil condition (Loose, Medium and Hard) and different seismic zone (II, III, IV and V). The forces acting on the structure are compared and elements are designed based on strength and serviceability criteria as per load combinations in IS 4651-2014. Also the comparison is done between different structural system based on safe pile diameter required and overall material consumption in the structure.
